How Drain Unblocking Works

Drain unblocking starts by locating the blocked pipe and a workable access point, then clearing the obstruction and testing the connected outlets.

Narrow down the section

How drain unblocking works depends on where the water stops and what is holding it back. The visit starts by tracing the affected fixtures and available chambers, then uses a method that can reach the restriction without guessing at the pipe route.

Some blockages release through rodding. Others need jetting to break up and move deposits along the run. If roots, damage or a repeated snag are suspected, clearance may be followed by a camera inspection.

How the visit moves from diagnosis to a flow check

We ask what changed, which fixtures react and what has already been tried. This prevents a local sink problem being treated like a main sewer fault, or a chemical-filled trap being approached without warning.

What should be checked first?

The first fixture or gully to lose flow. Whether using one outlet changes the level elsewhere.

Accessible inspection chambers and known pipe routes. Earlier blockages, clearance work or CCTV findings. Any cleaners, objects or building debris that may be in the pipe.

The order of work on site

The independent drainage company chooses the equipment after locating the restriction and checking the available route. Method selection may involve drain rodding, jetting and inspection according to what the run allows.

01

Narrow down the section

Fixture behaviour and chamber levels help show where normal flow ends.

02

Choose the right access point

A suitable access point is chosen and the surrounding working area is protected.

03

Clear the restriction

The obstruction is worked through or removed, with attention to the material and resistance encountered.

04

Run and observe

After the level falls, connected drainage is tested and any unresolved concern is explained.

When clearing the pipe is not the end

A one-off obstruction may need no further work once the drain runs normally. Recurring symptoms, root material or unusual resistance can point towards a defect that only becomes visible after loose waste is gone.

That is when a CCTV drain survey can earn its place. The footage can show joints, deformation and remaining deposits, giving any repair recommendation a visible basis.

Questions about a drain unblocking visit

Do you always start with jetting?

No. Access, pipe condition and the likely obstruction determine the method. Rodding can suit some straightforward runs, while other deposits respond better to jetting.

Can you inspect a drain while it is full?

Standing dirty water can hide the pipe wall and camera lens. Clearance usually comes first when a useful view cannot otherwise be obtained.

How do you know the blockage has gone? The blockage is not considered gone at the first drop in water level; the affected drainage is tested. Any remaining restriction or abnormal behaviour is discussed with you.

For the difference between direct mechanical clearance and fuller pipe cleaning, compare drain rodding with drain jetting.
