Emergency drain unblocking is needed when wastewater is rising, spilling or leaving essential facilities unusable. Stop adding water to the blocked pipe and keep people away from the spill. Infused Media can then pass the location and current risk to a proposed drainage company for its own attendance decision and quotation.
Say where the water is escaping and whether it is stable or still rising. Leave covers, pipe routes and equipment choice to the company that attends.
What to do before the visit
Stop putting water into the system. That means no more flushing, no washing machine cycles, no running taps connected to the blocked pipe. A blocked pipe holds a fixed amount before it spills, and every extra litre goes somewhere you do not want it.
Keep clear of wastewater
Move children, pets and anyone else away from standing sewage, and shut the door on an affected room if you safely can. Never climb into a chamber or put your hand into contaminated water, and leave heavy or damaged covers where they are. If foul water has reached sockets or electrical kit, stay out of that area entirely and get electrical help first.
Please do not pour chemical unblocker into a system that is already full. It tends to sit in the standing water where it becomes a hazard for whoever clears the pipe. If some has already gone in, give us the product name when you call.
Our advice on what to do while you wait gives you a simple way to note down what is happening without lifting anything or taking any risks.
Checking how much of the property is affected
A single sink backing up usually means a restriction close to that sink. Several fixtures failing together, or a chamber outside filling as you use water indoors, points further down the shared run. These are useful clues, but the actual pipe route still has to be confirmed on site.
If you have an overflowing outside drain, describe exactly where the water is coming up and whether it is still rising. Where a blocked main drain is knocking out multiple toilets or gullies, the order in which things failed helps us find the obstruction faster.
Sometimes the pipe that is spilling is shared with a neighbour, or sits beyond your boundary. The visit record can state where the blockage appears to sit and whether neighbouring properties are affected. The relevant owner, landlord, managing agent or wastewater company can then confirm responsibility.
What the call handler needs during an overflow
- When it started, and what was in use at the time.
- Every fixture that is affected, and any that still drain freely.
- Where the chambers and covers are, and whether any are locked.
- Anything already tried: plunging, rods, chemicals or a previous call-out.
- Whether this drain has blocked before and how quickly it came back.
- Anyone vulnerable on site, plus parking, hygiene or trading restrictions that must be planned around.
For commercial premises, mention inductions, permits or escort requirements straight away. Share those details early so the visit does not lose time at reception.
How an urgent blockage is cleared
On arrival, check the available access and narrow down where the obstruction sits. Some blockages come out with rods. For heavier or deeper obstructions, drain jetting may be used where the pipe and access make it safe.
Once flow is restored, the affected outlets are tested carefully without risking a second spill. The record should explain what came out of the pipe and whether the inspection found anything of concern: displaced joints, root fibres, scale or damage. The company should separate confirmed findings from anything still uncertain.
If the cause is still unknown, or this drain has form for blocking, a CCTV drain survey may be worthwhile once the water is down. That is always a separate, explained recommendation based on the site findings, never an automatic upsell.
Test the blocked pipe before handover
An emergency visit is about making your toilets, sinks and gullies usable again and stopping the spill. It cannot always fix the underlying cause in the same visit. Grease may need a fuller clean, and roots or a damaged section need their own plan once there is enough evidence.
Keep any footage, photos and notes we give you. If the same run misbehaves again, that history helps reveal the pattern. Our drain unblocking services page shows how clearance, cleaning and investigation fit together.
What an urgent visit may leave unresolved
An urgent visit concentrates on containing wastewater and reopening the blocked route. A full wall clean, camera survey or permanent pipe repair is separate work rather than an automatic part of the same appointment.
Roots, damaged pipe or heavy deposits found during clearance remain separate follow-up work. The visit record should locate the concern and explain what was completed, while the independent drainage company confirms any further quotation directly with you.
