Drain unblocking cost varies with access and the work needed inside the pipe. Clearing an accessible sink waste is not the same job as reaching a buried main drain beneath a car park. A price is easier to judge when the quotation names the drain section and the work included.
Do not assume that the lowest total covers the same result. One company may quote for opening the blockage and checking flow. Another may include wall cleaning, CCTV or removal of material from site.
Work that changes the price
The starting access point, depth of the blockage, standing wastewater and working conditions can all alter the time or equipment required. Locked chambers, restricted parking and work inside a trading area may also affect the proposed visit.
Keep clearance, cleaning and CCTV on separate lines
Clearance restores a route through the obstruction. Cleaning removes deposits along a longer section. CCTV records visible pipe condition. A quotation should say which of these jobs is included.
It should also explain what happens if the first access point does not reach the fault. That possibility is different from an open-ended promise to do whatever is found for one unexplained figure.
Any structural repair belongs to a later decision supported by a located finding. Read when CCTV is useful before accepting a camera survey as an automatic extra.
Compare the same drain section and final check
Place the quotations side by side. Check whether both cover the same access point, clearing method, recovered material and test of connected outlets.
A lower price for simple clearance is not directly comparable with a price that includes pipe cleaning and a written camera report. The totals make sense only after the included work has been matched.
Before accepting a drainage price
- Identify the drain and access point covered by the quotation.
- Confirm whether the price covers clearance, cleaning or both.
- Check how the company will prove that normal flow has returned.
- Keep optional CCTV and material recovery visible.
- Ask for separate approval before any repair work begins.
If access or the obstruction remains uncertain, the drainage company should state the assumption. You can then see which change on site would alter its price.
A phone estimate may change after inspection
Photographs and an accurate description can improve an estimate, but hidden pipe condition cannot be confirmed over the phone. The proposed drainage company sets its own price and explains any change before additional work is accepted.
