Drain Unblocking Services

Blocked toilets, sinks, gullies and underground drains need different access and clearing methods. Start with the outlets affected and what the water is doing.

Drain unblocking services start with the way your drainage is behaving today. A toilet that fills to the rim, a kitchen sink that barely moves and an inspection chamber spilling outside need different first steps. Trace the blocked pipe, choose a workable access point and use equipment suited to what is found.

Getting water moving is the immediate aim, but it is not the only question. The visit record should note material removed, resistance inside the run and anything that suggests the pipe deserves a closer look. If the same fault has happened before, that history becomes part of the job rather than an afterthought.

Which outlets are affected?

List every affected fixture, when the problem began and whether using one outlet changes the level somewhere else. Include earlier clearance work, camera findings and any chemical poured into the drain. Those facts help the drainage company quoting for the work plan the right access and equipment.

Fixture and underground drain unblocking

Some faults sit close to the room where they appear. Food waste and grease can restrict a kitchen waste pipe, while paper or an unsuitable item may stop a toilet trap or branch. Other symptoms are only the visible end of an obstruction farther along the underground drainage.

When several outlets slow together, or flushing raises water in a different fixture, look for a shared section. Outside chambers can help establish which parts are holding water and which remain clear. That avoids spending time on the toilet or sink when the real blockage is beyond it.

For household drainage, domestic drain unblocking covers internal fixtures, private runs and external gullies. Minimise water use when levels are high because repeated testing can turn a contained obstruction into an overflow.

Drain rodding

Drain rods offer direct mechanical clearance from a suitable chamber or access point. They can break through and draw back certain obstructions, but their value depends on the pipe route. Tight changes in direction, damaged surfaces and unclear connections all affect whether they are sensible.

Rods should not be forced into an uncertain line simply because access is visible. Drain rodding works best from an entry point that gives useful control over the route to the blockage. What comes back on the tools can also provide an early clue about wipes, roots or compacted waste.

Drain jetting

Jetting sends water through a specialist hose and nozzle to break up, disturb and move material. It can be useful for soft deposits, grease and debris spread along a run, where simply piercing a narrow channel would leave much of the restriction behind.

Pressure alone is not a plan. Pipe condition, access, the material being removed and where loosened waste will travel all matter. Method selection follows the drain condition, especially where old pipework, unknown connections or prior damage may be present.

If jetting fits the run, read more about our water jetting for blocked drains. Post-jetting checks cover the system and any signs that cleaning has exposed a structural concern.

CCTV drain surveys

CCTV is not required for every ordinary blockage. A clear one-off obstruction may be resolved without filming the pipe. A camera becomes much more valuable when trouble repeats at the same point, root fragments appear, equipment meets unusual resistance or repair is being considered.

The drain usually needs to be clear enough for the lens to see the wall. Dirty standing water and loose material can hide the very joint or defect being investigated. The independent drainage company decides whether the line needs more cleaning before it can be surveyed.

A CCTV drain survey should record the inspected route and visible findings. Footage should support a conclusion, not be handed over as an unexplained video that leaves you guessing where it was taken.

Root removal from drains

Roots enter through an opening. They may grow at a defective joint, crack or displaced section, then create a mesh that catches paper and solids. Cutting restores space inside the drain, but it cannot close the route used by the growth.

Root removal from drains is planned around the condition of the host pipe. Once the run is open, camera inspection can show the entry point and help separate a cleaning need from a repair decision. If roots are removed without considering that opening, the same problem may develop again.

Commercial drain unblocking

A workplace blockage affects more than the underground pipe. Toilets may be unavailable to staff, an overflow can affect a customer route, or kitchen drainage may disrupt hygiene controls. Equipment access, vehicle movement and the people responsible for authorising work must be understood before the visit begins.

For commercial drain unblocking, include a site contact, the operational effect and any working-area restrictions. For several properties, separate each postcode and symptom so a recurring fault at one site is not confused with a new obstruction elsewhere.

Checks after the blockage is cleared

Check the outlets or chambers relevant to the blockage. The first fall in water level is encouraging, but normal movement through the affected route is a better test. The visit record should explain what the work revealed and whether anything further is worth considering.

Further action might mean more cleaning, a survey, monitoring or a separately discussed repair. It should not be added automatically. A sensible recommendation has a reason connected to the material found, the drainage history or something visible inside the pipe.

Keep the attendance details with any footage and earlier maintenance notes. If the drain gives trouble later, a reliable record makes it easier to see whether the same section is involved and whether the previous method dealt with the full restriction.

Send your postcode, the affected fixtures and a short timeline. Mention standing water, an outside spill, recurring symptoms and anything already attempted. We can then discuss the service most likely to give the drain a useful first inspection. To confirm whether we can discuss attendance for your postcode, see our areas we cover page. You can also review our service records and CCTV findings and the way supported examples are handled in our drain unblocking case studies.

Drain unblocking service FAQs

How do you choose between rods and jetting?

The choice between rods and jetting depends on the obstruction, entry point, pipe route and condition. Rods provide direct mechanical contact, while jetting can work along deposits that need breaking up and moving.

Will you camera every drain after clearing it?

No. CCTV is recommended only where it can answer a real question, particularly after repeated trouble, root evidence or concern about damage.

Can you deal with a blockage affecting several toilets?

Several toilets filling or slowing together point first to a shared section. The drainage company needs an access point to that run and should check the connected toilets together after clearance.

What should I do if wastewater is coming outside?

Reduce incoming water, keep people away from the affected area and avoid adding chemicals. List the fixtures that were in use when the level rose.

Does clearance repair a damaged drain?

No. Clearance removes or moves an obstruction. If the pipe is cracked, displaced or deformed, any repair is a separate decision based on the condition found.
