Find the nearest chamber that follows the pipe in the correct direction. Controlled drain rodding depends on that route, the bends ahead and enough space to recover material at the access point.
Rodding needs a chamber that points towards the restriction and enough room to keep each section controlled. Tight bends, uncertain branches or a tool already lost in the pipe are reasons to stop and choose another route.
When drain rods are the right tool
Good access matters as much as the type of blockage. Look at the chamber layout, the direction of flow, bends in the run and anything already tried before deciding how to approach it.
The pipe route decides whether rods are appropriate
Rods need a direct, controllable path from a sound chamber or rodding point. A visible cover is not enough if the blockage lies around a tight change of direction or beyond an uncertain branch.
Resistance felt through the rods and material brought back both matter. If the tools cannot be advanced and recovered safely, a different access point or method is the sensible decision.

When clearing is only half the answer

When drain rodding is a sensible first method
Rodding works best when the route is known, the chamber gives direct access and the obstruction can be reached without forcing tools around uncertain bends. It can be useful for a local soft blockage or for confirming how a run responds as the restriction begins to move.
